Psychological Assessment for Fertility Treatment
Supporting informed and psychologically prepared family building.
Families are created in many different ways.
At The Design Your Life Centre, we provide specialized psychological assessments for individuals and couples pursuing assisted reproduction, including same-sex couples, people pursuing parenthood independently, and individuals and couples using donor sperm, donor eggs, donor embryos or other forms of third-party reproduction.

If your fertility clinic has recommended or required a psychological assessment before proceeding with treatment, you may be wondering why it is necessary and what to expect.

The purpose of the assessment is to help ensure that you understand and have had an opportunity to consider the psychological, relational and longer-term implications of the treatment you are pursuing—and to identify any areas where additional psychological support may be helpful.

Why is a psychological assessment part of fertility treatment?
Third-party reproduction and other forms of assisted family building can raise considerations that extend beyond the medical aspects of treatment.

A psychological assessment provides dedicated space to explore these considerations with a psychologist who understands fertility treatment and the unique issues that can accompany donor conception and assisted reproduction.

The goal is not to determine whether you are "good enough" to become a parent.

Rather, it is an opportunity to make sure that important psychological, relational and family considerations have been explored and that you have the information and support you need as you move forward.

What does the assessment explore?
Every situation is different, and the requirements of fertility clinics can vary.

Depending on your circumstances and the treatment you are pursuing, the assessment may explore:

-
Your fertility and family-building journey
-
Your understanding of the proposed treatment
-
Your thoughts and feelings about using donor sperm, donor eggs or donor embryos
-
The emotional and relational considerations relevant to your particular path to parenthood—whether you are pursuing it with a partner or independently
-
Expectations regarding known or unknown donors, where applicable
-
Questions related to genetics, identity and family relationships
-
How and when you might talk with a future child about their conception story
-
Decisions about privacy and disclosure to family and others
-
Your current sources of personal, family and social support
-
Your expectations about treatment and possible outcomes
-
Other considerations relevant to your particular family-building plan
The purpose isn't to tell you what to think. It is to ensure that you have had an opportunity to consider these issues thoughtfully and address questions or concerns before moving forward.

Mental health & psychological well-being
The assessment also includes consideration of your current mental health, psychological history and overall well-being.

Fertility treatment and family building can be emotionally demanding, particularly when the journey has included infertility, pregnancy loss, unsuccessful treatment or other significant life stressors.

As part of the assessment, we consider whether there are current or previous mental health concerns that may be relevant to your experience of treatment or the transition to parenthood.
Where appropriate, we may identify areas where additional psychological support could be beneficial and make recommendations for counselling, psychotherapy or other forms of care.

The purpose is not to expect perfect mental health.

Having experienced anxiety, depression, grief, trauma or other psychological difficulties does not in itself mean that someone is unable to proceed with fertility treatment.

Rather, the goal is to understand your individual circumstances, identify potential support needs and make appropriate recommendations so that you have the resources you may need as you move forward.
What should I expect?
The exact process will depend on your circumstances, the treatment you are pursuing and the requirements of your fertility clinic.
If your clinic has provided a referral, form, checklist or other documentation describing what is required, please send it to us before your appointment.

We will review the requirements and explain the assessment process, including what information will be collected and what documentation will be provided to your fertility clinic.
